John Roderigo Dos Passos<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0(<\/span><\/span><\/span>\/<\/a>d<\/a>\u0275<\/a>s<\/a>\u02c8<\/a>p<\/a>\u00e6<\/a>s<\/a>\u0275<\/a>s<\/a>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span>; January 14, 1896 \u2013 September 28, 1970) was a radical American novelist and artist active in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and he went on to Harvard College, graduating in 1916. He was well-traveled, visiting Europe and the Middle East, where he learned about literature, art, and architecture. During World War I he was a member of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Paris and Italy, later joining the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>U.S. Army<\/a>Medical Corps<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 1920 he had his first novel published,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>One Man’s Initiation: 1917<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>, and in 1925 his\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Manhattan Transfer<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0became a commercial success. In 1928, he went to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Soviet Union<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0to study\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>socialism<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, and later became a leading participator in the April 1935\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>First American Writers Congress<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0sponsored by the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>communist<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>-leaning\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>League of American Writers<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>. He was in Spain in 1937 during the<\/span><\/span><\/span>Spanish Civil War<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, when the murder of good friend\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Jos\u00e9 Robles<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0soured his attitude toward communism and severed his relationship with fellow writer\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Ernest Hemingway<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He is best known for his\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>U.S.A. trilogy<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0which consists of the novels\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>The 42nd Parallel<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0(1930),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>1919<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0(1932), and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>The Big Money<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>(1936). In 1998, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Modern Library<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0ranked the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>U.S.A. Trilogy<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a023rd on its list of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>100 best English-language novels of the 20th century<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

By the 1950s his political views had changed dramatically, and in the 1960s, he actively campaigned for presidential candidates<\/span><\/span><\/span>Barry Goldwater<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Richard M. Nixon<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

An artist as well as a novelist, Dos Passos created cover art for his books, was influenced by the modernist movements in 1920s Paris, and continued to paint throughout his lifetime. He died on Monday, September 28, 1970.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
