It was produced by Yorke&#8217;s longtime collaborator&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nigel_Godrich\">Nigel Godrich<\/a>, and developed through live performances and studio work. It was accompanied by a short film directed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Thomas_Anderson\">Paul Thomas Anderson<\/a>&nbsp;released on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netflix\">Netflix<\/a>&nbsp;and in select&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IMAX\">IMAX<\/a>&nbsp;theatres. Yorke embarked on an international tour to support the album; later dates were postponed due to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/COVID-19_pandemic\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Anima<\/em>\u00a0became Yorke&#8217;s first number-one album on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dance\/Electronic_Albums\"><em>Billboard<\/em>\u00a0Dance\/Electronic Albums<\/a>\u00a0chart. It was followed by the\u00a0<em>Not the News<\/em>\u00a0<em>Rmx EP<\/em>, featuring an extended version of &#8220;Not the News&#8221; plus remixes. At the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2020_Grammy_Awards\">2020 Grammy Awards<\/a>, it was nominated for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Alternative_Music_Album\">Best Alternative Music Album<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Best_boxed_or_special_limited_edition_package\">Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package<\/a>; the\u00a0<em>Anima<\/em>\u00a0film was nominated for the Grammy for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Best_Music_Film\">Best Music Film<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Anima<\/em>\u00a0was accompanied by a 15-minute film directed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Thomas_Anderson\">Paul Thomas Anderson<\/a>. The\u00a0<em>Anima<\/em>\u00a0film was played in some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IMAX\">IMAX<\/a>\u00a0theatres and released on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netflix\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0on the day of the album release.\u00a0It features Yorke&#8217;s then-girlfriend, actress Dajana Roncione, plus choreography by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Damien_Jalet\">Damien Jalet<\/a>, cinematography by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darius_Khondji\">Darius Khondji<\/a>, and projections by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tarik_Barri\">Tarik Barri<\/a>.\u00a0In the film, Yorke rides a train of uniformed passengers (&#8220;Not the News&#8221;). He meets the eye of a woman (Roncione), and pursues her when she forgets her bag (&#8220;Traffic&#8221;). They meet in the street, dance together, and board a tram (&#8220;Dawn Chorus&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film began with a concept from Yorke about workers whose &#8220;bodies don&#8217;t work any more&#8221; and are being &#8220;pushed by an invisible force&#8221;. The team wanted the first sequence to be &#8220;oppressive and hyper-precise so it feels like a machine&#8221;, influenced by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dystopian_fiction\">dystopian stories<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nineteen_Eighty-Four\">Nineteen Eighty-Four<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metropolis_(1927_film)\">Metropolis<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Physical_comedy\">physical comedy<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charlie_Chaplin\">Charlie Chaplin<\/a>.\u00a0For the &#8220;Traffic&#8221; sequence, the team created a platform inclined at a 34-degree angle and placed the camera at the same angle, erasing the slope.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anima&nbsp;is the third studio album by English musician&nbsp;Thom Yorke, released on 27 June 2019 through&nbsp;XL Recordings.
